The loss making French ski maker Rossignol is to be bought by Quiksilver, the US-Australian sporting equipment and clothing company best known for surfing wear. The price is 241 million euros. Laurent Boix-Vives, whose family owns 45% of Rossignol and holds 63% of the voting rights reached agreement with Quiksilver's president Bernard Mariette.
Boix-Vives said: "This deal is what I wanted. It means Rossignol can develop with Quiksilver under more favorable conditions given that competition is getting tougher through a growing number of mergers.
After three years of falling revenues Rossignol has been restructuring. Its market share in snowboard gear has been shrinking and its share of the ski market has remained flat.
Turnover last year was 485 million euros, putting the French company second to Germany's Adidas-Salomon in winter sports equipment. The merger will create the world's biggest outdoor sports equipment company. Rossignol, which is French for nightingale, was founded in 1907. It is a proud name for the French partly through decades of winning performances in the winter Olympics.
The company blames its recent problems on the fall in the value of the dollar and increased competition from China.
Rossignol employs 2,900 people, of whom half work in France. It owns three factories making skis and snowboards, two in France and one in Spain. The merger will lead to the loss of 134 jobs.
